Prepped, Cooked, Served – A fresh look and report on the Sun Basket healthy meal kit subscription. Prepared, April 2020

So, What is Sun Basket?

Sun Basket is a meal delivery kit you order by subscription. Each week you can view the Sun Basket menu on their website and select dinners from that week’s recipe choices. You also choose a delivery date. You will be sent in the mail a box of ingredients you use to prepare and cook your selected recipes. Fun, huh?!! Here’s how it went for me.

My First Sun Basket : A dinner recipe review!

This was my first Sun Basket order. Right in the middle of the COVID-19 “stay at home” lockdown, this was scheduled to be delivered for Tuesday, April 7th but didn’t end up getting shipped until later in the day and arrived at around 5:30 pm on the 8th (luckily it was a rainy, chilly day in Los Angeles, so the ice packs and food were still very cold). I ordered three dinners for two people, the ingredients arriving in a big box containing separate brown sacks labeled for each of the three recipes. All the ingredients looked fresh on arrival, there are even printed recipe cards included (though one of my dinners was missing the recipe card). The recipe cards are smaller than other meal kits I have used, but do the trick.

😛

Okay, Let’s Eat! : How yummy was it? My honest opinions about each recipe I made and ate (box was received on April 8, 2020):

Ratings: 4 stars = Super Yummy; 3 stars = Yummy; 2 stars = Meh; 1 star = Yucky

  1. CHICKEN AND HUMMUS FLATBREAD “TACOS” with GREEK KALE SALAD (with Chicken Thighs)

Chicken and hummus flatbread tacos, topped with Greek kale salad. A Sun Basket meal kit recipe.
Yummy! Chicken and hummus flatbread tacos! Topped with kale salad.

    — This was quite easy to prepare and ended up being very yummy. It made four flatbread tacos, two each for two! Only 570 calories per plate but completely filled me up (even had a little bit of the Kale salad as leftovers for lunch the next day). The dressing on the Kale salad tasted very good (and smelled really good too). The lavash flatbread that Sun Basket sent was also real flavorful and fresh. I wouldn’t have minded just a *touch* more feta cheese for these (though that would have raised the calorie count!) Note: this dinner was missing the recipe card in my box, so I had to look at the recipe online. – ****

  2. THAI TURKEY SALAD with CABBAGE, CILANTRO, AND CASHEWS

Thai Turkey Salad, a Sun Basket recipe with cabbage, cashews, radishes, cilantro, toasted coconut.
Sun Basket’s Thai turkey salad with cabbage, cashews, radishes, cilantro, toasted coconut – wow, so good!

    — Absolutely delicious!! Great combination of flavors (the “Sun Basket lemongrass paste” smelled SO darn good). Extremely easy to prepare too. To note: this recipe was sent with “Organic fresh cilantro” as a substitute for what was originally meant to be “Organic fresh Thai basil” (recipe card called this “with cabbage, basil, and cashews”). Since this bright, flavorful salad tasted so good, I guess it didn’t really matter! – ****

  3. PORK CHOPS with FIG AGRODOLCE AND CARAWAY CABBAGE

Pork chops with Fig Agrodolce and Caraway Cabbage, a Sun Basket Meal Kit Recipe.
So delicious! Pork chops topped with a fig sweet-sour sauce plus a cooked cabbage and apple dish on the side. Talk about comfort food!

    — This recipe was slightly more task/labor intensive than the first two (though still quite easy). Now, I’m gonna say, the first two Sun Basket dinners were real, real tasty — and this was, possibly, the best of the three! The quality of the pork loin chops sent was excellent, all the produce was fresh and great in flavor. Everything blended together into a lovely dish – with a wonderful, tasty “fig agrodolce” served on top (lots of it too).
To note: “agrodolce” is an Italian sweet-and-sour sauce.
Also to note: The “arrowroot powder” used to thicken this sauce worked really quickly and well. I am used to thickening sauces with cornstarch or flour – I thought the arrowroot powder worked much better (at least for this dish – woo hoo!). Yum yum. – ****

CONCLUSION:

— I must say, I am very, very impressed with Sun Basket – both for the high quality of the ingredients sent and the deliciousness combined with easy preparation of all three recipes I received this week. My only complaint is this meal kit is a bit pricey, so I can’t order this weekly (they also charge for shipping). The high quality ingredients and the interesting choices of recipes each week will keep me coming back though.

For your info: The cost of Sun Basket varies (depending on how many dinners you order each week). The box with 3 dinners, 2 servings each is currently priced at $11.99 a serving and $7.99 for shipping, total cost being $79.93. When you sign up you can choose a meal plan and how many dinners you want each week (you can change around or skip any week you like).
