The Best of L.A.

Classic Dishes

Here are some of our choices for the best foods, drinks, and dishes you can find at Los Angeles area restaurants.

  1. best pizzaBest Pizzeria-Style Pizza: Lido Pizza - Van Nuys
    15232 Victory Blvd - - phone: (818) 781-2551

Been going to this restaurant for many, many years - Lido's pizza has remained unchanged and consistently GREAT all this time. (I also love their Italian salad bowl - lettuce, sliced onions, garbanzo beans, and a couple of pepperoncini - still the same after all these years - yum.)

    Other good choices:
Casa Bianca - 1650 Colorado Blvd., Eagle Rock phone: 323-256-9617
Little Toni's - 4745 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood phone: 818-763-0131
Palermo - 1858 N. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles phone: 323-663-1178

  2. best soupBest Soup: Taix - Los Angeles - Website
    1911 Sunset Blvd - - phone: (213) 484-1265

As part of the "traditional Taix dinner" you get a tureen of their famous Soup du Jour for all at the table to share. It is always something different, and always super yummy. The chef who makes this soup REALLY knows what they're doing! Delicious - and the big bowl they give you is enough for everyone in your party to have several bowls, if desired.

    Other good choices:
Santa Anita Park - 285 W. Huntington Dr., Arcadia

  3. best martiniBest Martini: Musso and Frank Grill - Hollywood
    6667 Hollywood Blvd - - phone: (323) 467-7788

Traditional Martini served in a small glass, with extra glassful served on the side. Fab.

    Other good choices:
The Smokehouse - 4420 W. Lakeside Dr., Burbank phone: 818-845-3731

  4. best garlic breadBest Garlic Bread: Smoke House Restaurant - Burbank - Website
    4420 West Lakeside Drive - - phone: (818) 845-3731

As stated on their website "We are known for the world's greatest garlic bread, but don't take our word for it! Come in and try it yourself" - we did, and boy ain't it the truth. A basket of sliced, cheesy, baked garlic bread from the Smoke House - yum!

  5. best calamariBest Calamari: Villa Sorriso - Pasadena - Website
    168 W. Colorado Boulevard - - phone: (626) 793-2233

I have had Calamari at a number of different restaurants around town - when we ate at Sorriso recently and ordered their "Crisp Calamari" as an appetizer, I thought - this is it, the best in town! Fried in a yummy tasting batter, this Calamari is indeed crispy - and full of flavor, including a nice dipping sauce. Really good.

  6. best sports barBest Sports Bar: Clearman's Galley "The Boat" - San Gabriel - Website
    7215 N. Rosemead Blvd., San Gabriel - - phone: (626) 286-1484

A huge, comfortable restaurant with lots of long, family-style tables and big screen TVs showing a variety of sports surrounding the room. As we call it - "the Boat" has great burgers, salads, sandwiches, and other food, plus tasty beer. I love this place. This restaurant is family-friendly, feel fine in bringing your kids here. The new location, located just around the corner from the former one, now has a full bar!

  7. best mai taiBest Mai Tai: Damon's Steak House - Glendale - Website
    317 N Brand Blvd - - phone: (818) 507-1510

I have had a lot of Mai Tai's around town over the years - Damon's offers a strong, rum-laden concoction that isn't too sweet and has an EXTRA special flavor to it. A feeling of euphoria comes over you after a couple of these - plus the kick everyone seems to get from these drinks leaves the whole bar area full of happy, noisy patrons living it up! Love it.

    Other good choices:
    Trader Vic's - 800 W. Olympic Blvd., Los Angeles phone: 213-785-3330
Hop Louie - 950 Mei Ling Way, Los Angeles phone: 213-628-4244

  8. best fudgeBest Fudge: Littlejohn's Candies (aka Littlejohn's English Toffee House) - Shop in the Original Farmers Market, Los Angeles - Website
    6333 West 3rd Street, Suite 432 - - phone: (323) 936-5379

Well, what can I say? This is just the best I've had - it practically melts in your mouth, yum! I have always enjoyed the Mackinac Island Fudge we get at the L.A. County Fair each year, but Littlejohn's is even better.

  9. best chicken pot pieBest Chicken Pot Pie: Moffett's Chicken Pie Shoppe
    1409 S. Baldwin Ave, Arcadia- - phone: (626) 477-4670

It's not surprising that a place that specializes in chicken pot pies would have the best in town. The pies here are pretty much as close to home made as you're likely to get in a restaurant. We also like that they have inexpensive, full meals here, with all the fixings.

    Other good choices:
Fish King - 722 N. Glendale Ave., Glendale phone: 818-244-2161

  10. best bread puddingBest Bread Pudding: The Kitchen - Website
    4348 Fountain Ave., Los Angeles- - phone: (323) 664-3663

The bread pudding at The Kitchen is a sweet, flavorful, down-home delight. One bite, and we think you'll agree that this is the best in town.

The Derby - 233 E. Huntington Dr., Arcadia phone: 626-447-2430

  12. hottest waitressesHottest Waitresses: Dillon's Irish Pub - Website
    6263 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood - - phone: (323) 315-9744

If you like pretty young women in sexy, but tantalizingly modest schoolgirl uniforms, you've come to the right place in Dillon's.
