2017 National Festival of Breads : Bread Baking Contest

Show off your bread baking skills in this national recipe contest, open to amateur bakers and also to young bakers (ages 8 to 17 years). Here are the details on entering and prizes:

How to enter:

Submit your original bread recipe in one of the following categories open to adults (18 years and older) : “Holiday Breads“, “Rolls“, “Time-Saving and Simple Breads“, or “Whole Grain Breads“. There are also two categories open to entries from youths (ages 8 to 17) : “Yeast Breads” or “Quick Breads“. You must include a short history of the recipe and a photo. PLEASE NOTE that recipes must include KING ARTHUR unbleached wheat flour (see rules for flour varieties you may use). Yeast bread recipes must use at least one ¼ ounce package (2¼ teaspoons) RED STAR Yeast (any variety).

Judging and selecting the winners:

Each recipe will be read by a team of food professionals and then selected recipes will be test baked. The recipes will be judged on “taste and texture”, “visual appeal”, “nutritional value and healthfulness”, and “originality and ease of preparation”. Eight finalists in the Adult competition will be selected to compete in a bake-off in Manhattan, Kansas – where they will prepare their submitted and selected recipe for a chance at winning a cash award and prize package.

Prizes! Here’s what you can win:

Eight ADULT finalists will win a $500 cash award and a trip to Manhattan, Kansas to compete on Saturday, June 17th, 2017 for additional cash prizes. The trip includes air transportation for each finalist, hotel accommodations for three nights at the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel, daily meals, and a Wheat Harvest tour.

One GRAND PRIZE winner will be selected from the competition to win a $2,000 cash prize, $500 credit towards baking classes at the King Arthur Flour Baking Education Center in Norwich, Vermont (plus expenses towards travel and lodging up to $1,500). Grand Prize winner also wins a supply (120 envelopes) of Red Star Yeast.

One YOUTH OVERALL Grand Prize winner will receive a $300 scholarship. Two YOUTH RUNNER-UP winners will each receive a $100 scholarship.

There are also SPECIAL AWARDS, with cash prizes (see rules for details).

Who can enter this contest?:

This cooking competition is open to any AMATEUR YOUTH baker 8 to 17 years of age or AMATEUR ADULT baker 18 years of age or older at time of entry and is a legal United States resident residing in one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia. (An amateur baker is any person who does not make the major portion of their income by baking.)

How many recipes can I enter?:

Each entrant may enter as many original recipes as they wish (but can only be eligible to become a finalist with one recipe).
