French Dip - History of the Dish

Originating not in France, but in Los Angeles, California, the French Dip Sandwich remains an American favorite, found in restaurants and diners across the land. Rival L.A. eateries, Cole's and Philippe's, both claim to be the originators of the idea of the roast beef sandwich served au jus. Though the sandwich is more commonly served with a bowl of jus on the side for dipping, both of the purported originators dip the roll as part of the preparation.
